We are deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Imelda Malata, a Community Monitor from Iringa, Mufindi district. Imelda began volunteering with Raleigh Tanzania in 2018 as a Community Monitor for our Social Accountability through Youth (SAY) project. She took on this position with pride and professionalism, working closely with community leaders in Kinengembasi village.
Imelda was a hardworking volunteer who co-led monitoring of the Tajirika na Kilimo project. She was working to ensure that TNK project remains sustainable and young local farmers in her community are well trained. As a Community Monitor, she believed young people’s voice is integral to leading change. Her successful establishment of a joint working group within her own community is just a small example of the impact she was making by using her voice to encourage positive and collaborative social action. We are sure she would have gone on to achieve so much more.
Raleigh Tanzania Director, Alistair Mackay said: “Imelda was a wonderful young leader, who inspired everyone around her. We are so saddened to hear of the loss of such a committed and caring young person, and our thoughts are very much with her family and friends. At Raleigh, she will be missed by everyone who knew and worked with her and will be remembered for her enthusiasm and positivity at all the events she attended. Her joyful and open-minded approach to volunteering was so motivating to be around. Imelda was a true role-model for all young community leaders, and she will always be in our hearts”.
Raleigh Tanzania and Raleigh International sends our condolences to Imelda’s family and the entire community of Kinengembasi.
