Our story

Raleigh Tanzania is part of Raleigh International, a sustainable development charity which harnesses the passion and energy of young people to effect change in developing countries. Since our foundation as a charity in 1984, Raleigh International volunteers have become a global community of over 40,000 people committed to building a sustainable future. We launched Raleigh Tanzania in January 2013 following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with the Tanzanian Ministry for Youth, Information, Culture and Sport. So far, over 1,200 volunteers from around the world, including over 400 Tanzanian young people, have joined us working on sustainable development projects across the country.

Since our launch we have worked closely with project partners and communities using three different delivery models – Raleigh Expedition, International Citizen Service (ICS) and International Citizen Service Entrepreneur (ICSE). We work closely with project partners on programmes covering Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH), Community Resilience and Youth Leadership. Many of the volunteers that work with us continue to be inspired by their time on placement and join the Raleigh Tanzania Society in which they encourage others to become active members of their local communities.
